F-2e1n — Johannes Balbus, Catholicon
- Identification: identified, high confidence. Johannes Balbus, Catholicon, alphabetical dictionary, letter C. Entry sequence and explanatory wording support the identification, beyond any single familiar definition.
- Transcription: selected source-assisted evidence. A Codex reviewer compared entries in a cached full fol. [1]r image with the print. The separate image-only reading covers a clipped crop and contains only fragments. No full transcription or numerical accuracy estimate is certified.
- Verification: manuscript and print images. Fol. [1]r column b, Cataplectos/Cataplectatio through Cataracta, was checked against edition n211. Another part of the leaf supplies a Catalecticus check. The two leaves' full endpoints and original arrangement are unresolved.
Fragmentarium record · manifest. Fol. [1]r is SA_Brugge_20231017a_0047_Fragm_42.jp2. The image-only packet contains a 900 × 1250 crop whose exact origin and scale were not recovered. The whole-leaf image is a cached 1600-pixel-wide derivative. Neither image received additional enhancement or enlargement; abrasion affects the top of the leaf.
Sampled readings and comparison
The image-only response preserves the column-a sliver and incomplete column b separately. Its line numbers are not full-leaf line numbers. Cropped-out endings were not visible to that reader.
Selected source-assisted comparison text, localized by entry. The manuscript column is normalized with expanded abbreviations; expansion boundaries have not been systematically resolved:
| Entry | Manuscript, selected normalized text with expanded abbreviations | Printed comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Catapuera | Catapuera docta puella | Same definition and position before Catapulta. |
| Catapulta | … est vas ut dicunt vel potius sagitta cum ferro bipenni quam sagittam barbatam vocant | Same extended definition follows Catapuera. |
| Cataracta | … via subterranea qua aqua sub terra discurrit … per translationem in celo … | Same progression from underground water to the transferred celestial sense. |
These are selected normalized expansions, not a diplomatic transcription or a record of which letters are individually visible. Unresolved abbreviation boundaries are not represented by invented parenthetical divisions; the linked image-only record retains the limited unexpanded signs that reader could distinguish. A check of those boundaries against the full-width manuscript would be needed before publishing a diplomatic quotation. The Strasbourg edition, n211, upper right column, contains the sequence and wording. Its left column also has Catalecticus with the related acatalecticus and hypercatalecticus discussion. That sequence is visible lower in manuscript column a; this additional check supports identification across two portions of the leaf.
Limits
Agreement in several entries and sequence is stronger than docta puella alone. The full endpoints and the leaves' original separation remain unresolved. Further collation should use full-width native images of all four sides, especially the abraded upper passages. Date and provenance have not been independently established.
