F-v7a4: Mass book (probably a missal), readings for Monday after the first Sunday of Lent (Ez 34:11-14, Mt 25:31-35) and Monday after Reminiscere (Jn 8:22-24)
The limp parchment cover of this volume is a leaf from a Mass book, probably a missal, written in two columns of gothic textualis. Its outer face carries the two readings of the Mass for Monday after the first Sunday of Lent (Feria II post Invocavit). The Epistle, Ezekiel 34:11-14, fills column a, and the Gospel, Matthew 25:31-35, fills column b; the first letter of verse 36 may survive under a loose flap. The bottom edge is folded over, and this turn-in shows the other face of the leaf: the end of the same Gospel (Matthew 25:46, "[ib]unt hy in supplicium eternum") and the opening of the next day's Epistle (Isaiah 55:6, "d(omi)n(u)m dum inueniri potest"). A rolled parchment strip inside the back cover carries John 8:22-24, the Gospel for Monday after the second Sunday of Lent (Reminiscere). The preceding column of the strip probably carries Daniel 9:17, that day's Epistle. The texts are the standard Vulgate pericopes, the passages of Scripture appointed to be read at Mass. What is identified is their place in the liturgical year and the kind of book, not a rare text.
The Fragmentarium record is Ludwigsburg, Staatsarchiv Ludwigsburg, B 234 Bd. 12, titled "Unknown". The host volume is a Teutonic Order administrative book of 1540 (Bericht und Unterweisung von wegen des Amts Neuhaus, by Niklas Veh). The record describes only a music fragment visible under the pastedown of the back cover: probably paper, 16th century, at least 123 x 60 mm, white mensural notation on five lines, possibly instrumental music in score. The two images are labelled "Musikfragment_Textfragment_innen" and "Textfragment_aussen", but the description says nothing about either text fragment, their content or their date. The music is outside the scope of this report.
- Identification: identified, high, for the readings and the Masses they belong to. The basis is sustained agreement, in wording and in sequence, with the pericopes as printed for these days in a missal of 1519.
- On canvas 1, 32 lines were compared: Ezekiel 34:11b-14 and Matthew 25:31-35 (verse 36 only as a possible initial under a flap).
- On canvas 0, 7 lines were compared: John 8:22-24.
- Two differences of wording against the print were found. The manuscript has "in riuis in cunctis sedibus" where the print has "in riuis et in cunctis". It has "Vos deorsum estis" where the print has "Vos de deorsum estis".
- The manuscript's "visitabo illas" (Ezekiel 34:11) is the missal form, against the Vulgate's "visitabo eas". It is shared by printed Roman missals, so it does not point to a particular use.
- The use (the rite or order the book followed) is open. The matched readings are common to the Roman lectionary of these days, so they cannot separate a Teutonic Order missal from a diocesan or other Roman-type one.
- The book was a missal or a lectionary of epistles and gospels. A plenary missal (one with the chants and prayers of the Mass as well as the readings) is the more likely of the two, from the spacing:
- On the outer face, column a begins at the top of the column with Ezekiel 34:11b and column b begins with Matthew 25:31. The hidden lower part of column a would then hold the rest of the Epistle and, in a missal, a chant between the readings and the Gospel heading.
- On the inner face, Matthew 25:46 stands near the foot of one column and Isaiah 55:6 near the foot of the next. That leaves about a column between them, which is what a missal needs for the rest of Monday's Mass and the beginning of Tuesday's: Offertory, Secret, Communion, Postcommunion, Introit, Collect. A lectionary would begin the Tuesday Epistle a line or two after the Gospel.
- These are inferences from partly hidden columns; no chant or prayer was read.
- Transcription: image-only first reading and source-assisted reading.
- A research reader reread on the native images all 16 visible lines of both columns of canvas 1, the turn-in, the seven readable lines of the strip on canvas 0, and the five stained line-ends of the strip's preceding column.
- The Daniel line-ends ("[fa]ciem tu", "[sanctuar]iu(m) tuu(m) quod") are uncertain, as is the last line of column b, which lies under a loose flap.
- Accuracy has not been measured.
- Verification: a research reader compared the transcribed lines with page images of Missale ad notulam dominorum Teutonicorum (Hagenau 1519), fols. XXVII r-v and XXXIIII r-v. The coordinator read canvas 1, column b, native box 1403,376-2411,1200 ('[ma]iestate sua et omnes angeli eius cum eo, tunc sedebit super sedem maiestatis sue. Et congregabuntur ante eum omnes gentes, et separabit eos ab invicem sicut pastor segregat oves ab edis ...'), Matthew 25:31-34, and checked the liturgical placement against the 1519 Teutonic Order missal page image, MDZ bsb10197441 scan 91 (Feria secunda: the Ezekiel 34 epistle, gradual, then 'Secundum Mattheum xxv'). Gaps in coverage:
- The inner face of the cover leaf was seen only in the turn-in.
- The hidden lower halves of the columns were not seen.
- The Daniel attribution on the strip rests on five partial line-ends.
- No other missal or lectionary was collated. No human review.

Si enim nõ credideritis q(uia) ego sum |
The two differences of wording are both omissions in the manuscript: "et" before "in cunctis" (Ezekiel 34:13) and the first "de" in "Vos de deorsum" (John 8:23). Other differences are spelling only (michi/mihi, hys/his, the ampersand or Tironian et for "et"). Whether the Gospel continued past "eternum" with "iusti autem in vitam eternam" is hidden by the fold. The print places these texts as follows:
- Fol. XXVII is headed "Feria secunda" and "Feria secunda post Invocavit". It gives "Lectio Ezech. prophete xxxiiii", the gradual Protector noster, and "Secundum Mattheum xxv".
- Fol. XXXIIII is headed "Feria II post Reminiscere" and gives "Lectio Daniel. prophete ix", followed by "Secundum Joannem viii".
The print is a witness of the common Roman formulary for these days, not of this manuscript's use.
Comparison text: Missale ad notulam dominorum Teutonicorum (Hagenau 1519), Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Res/2 Liturg. 312, on page images. The pages used are scan 91, scan 92, scan 105 and scan 106. The title and attribution are those of the library's catalogue record (urn:nbn:de:bvb:12-bsb10197441-9). The scripture loci are those of the Vulgate.
Other items and limits
- Leaf order. The outer face of the cover leaf, with the Monday readings, comes before the face seen in the turn-in, which ends Monday's Gospel and begins Tuesday's Epistle.
- The strip. It comes from about a week later in the same Lenten sequence. It agrees with the cover leaf in script, two-column layout and kind of text, but that it comes from the same book has not been shown.
- Other items in the images. A later cursive note in the right margin of canvas 1 was not read. The music fragment on canvas 0 is the object of the catalogue description and is not treated here.
- Not claimed. This report claims nothing about the use (rite) of the missal, its date or place of origin, or its relation to the 1519 print.
